TRUE HEROES OF GETTYSBURG RECOMMENDATIONS

HS History Teacher

Just finished your book and found it to be delightful…it is a great book to introduce the Civil War to Middle School Students. The historical background is sound and the issues that it addresses: the romatic view of war verses the stark, bloody horror that is war is seen through the eyes of a young boy in a hurry to be a man, the questions of why and responsiblity are looked at in terms that young people can relate to. I found the plot to be compelling, and the characters are well written and catch the readers imagination…you can relate to these people. This book is something that should be in the middle school libraries and part of a middle school history curriculum. Not only does it look a the battle and some of the major figure in it, but it also can fire the imagination of the readers and impell them to delve further into the battle of Gettysburg and the war. I would strongly urge this book become a part of any middle school history teachers bookshelf and used as a textbook educational resource.

True Heroes of Gettysburg is a true gem of young adult historical fiction. Historically well grounded and vividly written, the novel takes us through the bloodiest battle of the Civil War through the eyes of young Darrell Stouffer as he confronts moments of great personal courage and individual sacrifice. Darrell’s witness to three harrowing days of this momentous event in American history leaves him – and young readers – forever changed by the experience. This is a compelling story about one of the great moments of American history.

I have an 11 year old daughter in 6th grade. Language Arts is not my daughter’s strong subject. As a matter of fact, we have struggled with finding books that interest her to encourage her reading. THANK YOU!!!! She loved your book. She is not a fast reader (again, she struggles with comprehension) but when at last she finished you could tell me all about it. She comprehended it great! She had a couple of questions: Have you written any other books at her level? Are you going to write a sequel to follow the main character or any of the other characters in the book? Would you write a book about another war? I can’t express my thanks enough for engaging my child in learning through entertainment!
