Strong Vincent A Call to Glory

Release date: July 12, 2024

Heroes of the Battle of Gettysburg have been written about since the conflict ended. OOPS! Writers have missed one of the most critical leaders of the battle, Col. Strong Vincent.

Strong went to college where he met his future wife, Elizabeth. He graduated from Harvard with a law degree and returned to Erie to become a lawyer.

Just as he was beginning his life as a lawyer and ready to marry Elizabeth, Civil War breaks out. In 1861, Lincoln calls for volunteers, and Strong Vincent is one to sign up. With no previous military experience, he worked his way from lieutenant to colonel. He led his men at the Battle of Fredericksburg, where his troops ended up spending a harrowing night on the ground, dodging bullets fired by the Confederates.

Vincent’s glory was obtained at the Battle of Gettysburg. When a vital part of the defensive line was left  unguarded, Vincent led his small brigade to Little Round Top. Outnumbered by more than two-to-one, they had to put up a historic defense. If his soldiers surrendered this ground, Union victory would be in jeopardy.

Strong Vincent – A Call to Glory explores how heroes are made and also examines the problems of a young couple, trying to hold on to a romance in the midst of war.

True Heroes of Gettysburg is a true gem of young adult historical fiction.

Just finished your book and found it to be delightful…it is a great book to introduce the Civil War to Middle School Students.

Meet John Hinman

John Hinman is a retired middle school English teacher, living in Erie, Pa. His love of studying the Civil War began when he read Across Five Aprils as a child. After graduating from Edinboro University with a degree in education, John taught for almost thirty years in the Erie area. He wanted his students to like the Civil War as much as he did, and so he wrote True Heroes of Gettysburg. He taught his novel to seventh graders as the history teacher was teaching the Civil War. Being from Erie, Pennsylvania, John noticed that Strong Vincent, one of the main contributors to the Union victory at Gettysburg, had not been adequately portrayed in novels or historic accounts of the battle, and this proved to be his inspiration for writing his novel celebrating this important figure. John enjoys reading, doing volunteer work, and spending time with his family, especially with his dog, a Chihuahua-Dachshund mix named Duke.
